to me, this lyric is about man’s weakness: trading love for hypocrisy, hatred, and unfounded judgment. we love who we want to love rather than who God commands us to love. we say “God loves you” without meaning it & look upon those unlike ourselves with disdain.
“if they strike once, then you just hit ’em twice as hard”: rather than seeking forgiveness, man seeks petty revenge; we are responsible for our own demise. do not block your ears to God’s commands or close your eyes to his loving vision for you. for though mankind will commit to telling you otherwise, there is only one truth:
God loves you, and he wants to save you; so, child, you’ll never have to fend for yourself
